How Was Your Opener?

At last the official and traditional start of trout season has come! Last Saturday was the Last Saturday in April and most everyone I know who’s a trout angler went Up North to visit the historical places and parties to celebrate. Up in Lovells, the annual Wader Parade, for instance, took place crossing the bridge in town.

I myself did not fish, for reasons purely unforgivable, but outlined enough in my previous blog post. 

And I didn’t expect there to be much success, either. Was expecting the weather to be lousy: wind and rain, freezing rain, and unpredictable squalls. But alas, the temperatures remained “not too bad” and there was little to no rain, and so people were very excited to get out onto their target water. The skies were overcast in that perfect trout fishing way, and when my friends came over at the end of the day, ready to drink and eat and tell stories, more of them reported success on the water than I had expected.

Hendrickson flies, of course, were the preferred meal for those trout. Blue Winged Olives were sporadically abundant and the fish became excited over them. (Under them?)

Sunday was another promising overcast day, and everyone scattered after breakfast to get back to the river. 

The verdict?  THIS WAS THE BEST OPENER IN YEARS!

My friends took some pictures of their adventures, scenes familiar to many of us who fish the Ausable river system, so if you didn’t get up for Opener, you can be reminded of the beloved terrain we fish.
