2022 Oregon Salmonfly Camp on The Deschutes

During the month of May, a special thing happens when we see the giant salmonfly (Pteronarcys californica) emerge from the cold, fast waters of Oregon's high-desert rivers. When the conditions are right, these enormous insects take to the sky in incredible numbers.  During this hatch, the Trout in the Deschutes River find it nearly impossible to resist one of these huge bugs that's fallen from a tree or off of the grassy bank. They throw caution to the wind and smash these huge, winged chunks of protein off the surface with reckless abandon. There is no mistaking a salmonfly take - the trout will often come all the way out of the water at speed when grabbing one of these irresistible meals.

For only $2100 we'll provide you with 3.5 days of intense, guided fishing (2 anglers per boat) with the exceptional guides from Watertime Outfitters and streamside Lodging that includes all meals between May15 and 18th. Price does not include airfare, alcohol or guide gratuities.

The Great Basin redband trout is a particularly beautiful subspecies of the rainbow trout that is native to southern Oregon and parts of California and Nevada. Because these fish have grown-up in the very fast water of the Deschutes River, they are incredibly strong fighters for their size and will often put on a heart-pounding display of acrobatics when hooked. We’d be willing to bet that you’ve never had a 14” trout peel line off your reel like these fish can. The best part - the Deschutes holds approximately 3500 of these fish per mile! With numbers like these, you’re arm will be sore at the end of the day from fighting fish.

The guides that we partner with for this trip are, without question, the best guides in the business. Regardless of where you fall on the spectrum of fly fishing experience, these guys will put you on piles of beautiful, native fish that you’ll never forget.

The Deschutes river and the canyon that contains it are truly sights to behold. As soon as you arrive in Maupin, you’ll see that this is place is like no other you’ve seen before.  Over the course of 4 days and 3 nights, we’ll explore a 30 mile section of this mighty river. We'll put out boats in near a place called trout creek and float our way back to Maupin camping in a different location each night. Although we’ll be floating in drift boats, regulations on the Deschutes state that you can not fish from a boat. Because of these regulations, a typical day will see us stop 3-4 times to get out of the boat at prime spots to wade-fish.

After the fishing day is over and before a new day starts, the guides put on their hospitality hats and put you in the lap of luxury at the stream side camp that was setup hours before you even got got there by the guide staff who floated ahead of the group to a predetermined camp location. All food is provided while on our float and is expertly prepared and served in a large dinging tent.  These guys really know how to take car of their guests. Large, canvas tents that sleep 2-3 are provided along with cots. All you need yo bring is a sleeping bag and a pillow. As long as the weather cooperates, and is usually does, you can skip the tent completely. Sleeping outside under nothing but the stars is really the way to do it.
