We are pleased to introduce a selection of unusual gift soaps. "Home from a Walk in the Woods" started us off, and we soon added a line of natural animal tallow soaps hand-rendered by a friend of hunters and herders. SOAP: Home from a Walk in the Woods

Hate leaving the woods? Then take it with you: Home from a Walk in the Woods, our first scented soap, will bring you back to your favorite northern woodland. The first time we held it, we were immediately transported to a certain stand of trees along the Manistee River in Deward, Michigan - on a warming day when the pine needles and soft loamy earth are just letting up their intoxicating aroma. Here is a blend of fragrant cedar, oakmoss, spruce, and juniper. This is not a girly-smelling soap: men love it! Mild for the face and body, with added oils of select fruit, nuts, and seed kernels, this soap is especially good for grimy hands and sensitive skin. It's being made by our neighbor who lives one farm over from ours, whose family has farmed for generations and knows how to get dirty and then clean again without being dried out. 6 hearty ounces, cellophane wrapped for shipping and longevity of scent.

Deer Tallow Soap: "Prairie"

Natural, hand-rendered deer tallow soap made especially for The Painted Trout. Tallow soaps have a creamy lather and are very mild on the skin. Our eco-forager friend helps her friends process deer during hunting season in exchange for meat, but feels it's important to waste as little of the animal as possible - so she harvests sinew and hide as well as fur and the tallow used in these soaps. Perfectly scented to harmonize with the natural tallow aroma, this soap will transport you. Think open grassland on a warm September evening. Perfectly scented to harmonize with the natural tallow aroma, this soap made us yearn for a certain tack establishment in Sheridan, Wyoming - complete with oiled leather and old wood. At least 4 hearty ounces, cellophane wrapped for shipping and longevity of scent.
Here's more: Our soap-maker writes: For a number of years I have helped friends process deer during hunting season in exchange for meat. Since it was important to both myself and these honorable hunters that as much of the animal be used as possible, I also harvested many materials besides the meat; hides and the sinew to use for making buckskin projects and the tallow for bird food. It wasn't long before I decided to put the tallow to another use and try my hand at making soap the "old fashioned" way. After many experimental batches, I came upon a recipe that far exceeded the store-bought bars I had been using. Tallow soaps have a creamy lather and are very mild on the skin. The tallow used in all these soaps is hand rendered and chosen because of the integrity of the people handling the animals."

Buffalo Tallow Soap: "Cedar & Sage"

Lightly scented by the essential oils of Cedar and Clary Sage, this moisturizing soap is made extra-creamy by hand-rendered buffalo tallow. The scent made us think of a certain scrub along an unnamed creek in the Bighorns. All natural. At least 4 hearty ounces, cellophane wrapped for shipping and longevity of scent.
