We hadn't considered carrying books at The Painted Trout until recently, when a couple of, um, "friends" of ours turned us on to split cane bamboo rod making. (See blog).  Over drinks with my friend Ron Barch we got to talking and I said I'd read the books he publishes, and if I liked 'em I'd put them for sale on my website.  So I liked 'em.
Here are three books by Kathy Scott, whose subject would seem to be split cane bamboo fly rods and their makers. But really her subject is much more than that; in a unique style that is as meandering as it is straightforward, she renders a very particular world and craft that are as alive and shifting as the back woods of Maine that are the setting for these books. Her narratives of nature and solitude, artfulness and clarity, purpose and perfection are at once enlightening and soothing.  No Hollywood movie will ever be made from such writing (Thank you), but they will transport you nonetheless.
Three titles, each with its own emphasis on the processes and learning curves associated with bamboo rod making, and with its own anecdotes about the natural world in which the story is set.
