*Scrimshaw items are created from an original hand-carved wax mold, then cast in man-made polymer or "synthetic ivory."  The end result looks exactly like ivory but no animal is sacrificed. The scrimshaw effect is achieved by coloring the clay before it is cast and then inking the finished product.
